I have not yet buried the sensor under the driveway because of the frozen ground. I have it lying parallel to the side of the driveway tucked behind a shrub. An indicator on the front of the camera turns red, and you know at a glance that the camera is now only accessible by you.

The camera can also be set up to show a green light when the camera is being accessed. The camera can be set to automatically record video at certain times and certain speeds. In addition, with optional, external sensors attached to the camera, it's possible for the camera to email or record when triggered by motion, sound, light, timer, or even a push button. These convenient functions eliminate your need to constantly check the image.

Having a Driveway Alarm Is a Good Idea

Having a driveway security alarms is a good idea. It's nice to get a heads up when someone arrives. If you live in a rural area as we do, it's even better. We had an Innotek Driveway Guardian for 7 years and it worked great. When it bit the dust, we found Innotek no longer made them so we went in search of a new model. We specifically wanted an 'electro-magnetic' type as there are numerous deer and other types of wildlife on our property, so a 'motion' unit was out. In a nutshell, for under $100, this is a very good unit. It claims a 1000' range under 'ideal conditions' so before we installed it we decided to test that statement. We measured out 1000' and made sure there was absolutely nothing between the transmitter and receiver.

Battery Powered Driveway Monitor

When we moved the transmitter (an action that causes it to alarm) the receiver sounded off loud and clear, and this was without adjusting the signal strength of the transmitter (an option). We have since permanently installed the transmitter on a post and added a little roof over it to help shield it from the rain. It is positioned 75 yards from the transmitter, line of sight, with a few bushes in between. It's worked consistently since installed. The good: The transmitter has an unobtrusive and stylish appearance. It mounts on either a stake (provided) or with an optional 'L' bracket so your can mount it to a post.

We mounted ours to a post and built a roof over it. We recommend this as most of these units are made of plastic and will not stand up to long term exposure to the elements. The battery cover is of good design and has a rubber O-ring for moisture. We added some petroleum jelly to the ring to help seal it. It's easy to change the batteries although battery life is unknown at this time. The receiver is very small and has the ability to sit on a counter top or mount on the wall. It has an 8" long antenna which we believe is necessary for a unit of this type to function properly.

The receiver has an AC power supply, a green 'ready' light, a red flashing light that accompanies the alarm, an '8 hour off' and 'permanent off' mode and an accessory connector that allows for a visual signal such as a lamp to be installed. The unit does not have battery back-up which does not seem like an issue to us. The 'just OK': This is our only complaint. Some driveway alarms have an option to adjust the volume and type of alarm on the receiver. This one doesn't. Although the alarm is loud enough, we would prefer to set it at a volume level that suits us. We'd also like the ability to select a different alert tone.
